A business creates responsive search ad headlines, a couple of descriptions and a final URL. Then launches without adding sitelinks, callouts, a phone number, location information or any of the other assets that help searchers decide whether to click. The ad may still run, but it has fewer ways to answer questions, build trust, showcase services and generate calls. Our guide to writing Google Ads covers the ad copy itself. This article covers everything that supports it.
Headlines earn attention. Assets help the searcher decide what to do next.
Google Ads Extensions vs Assets: What Changed?
Google previously used terms like "ad extensions," "sitelink extensions" and "call extensions." The current name is assets: sitelink assets, call assets, location assets and so on. The purpose is largely the same. They add useful information or actions to an eligible ad. This article uses "assets" as the correct current term while naturally including "extensions" since many people still search for it.
The name changed. Their role in making ads more useful did not.
The Short Answer: Which Google Ads Assets Matter Most?
Priority | Asset | Best Use |
Core | Sitelinks | Send users to specific service pages, quotes, reviews |
Core | Callouts | Highlight benefits, trust signals and differentiators |
Core | Structured snippets | Show the range of services or product categories |
Conditional | Call | Generate phone enquiries (phone led businesses) |
Conditional | Location | Visits, directions and local proof (physical locations) |
Conditional | Image | Add relevant visual proof (visual industries) |
Optional | Price | Show transparent pricing or starting rates |
Optional | Promotion | Highlight genuine time sensitive offers |
Optional | Lead form | Capture enquiries directly in the ad |
Optional | Business name/logo | Reinforce brand identity and recognition |
Specialist | App | App downloads (not most local businesses) |
Specialist | Affiliate location | Retail stockist discovery |
Add every asset type that genuinely helps the customer make a decision. Do not add an asset merely because the interface offers it. If you are setting up a new account, our Google Ads setup guide covers the broader process.
Where Assets Appear and How They Are Chosen
Assets may appear beneath an ad, alongside text, as additional links, as a call button, with address information, with images or with pricing. Adding an asset does not guarantee it will show every time. Whether it appears depends on predicted usefulness, ad position, Ad Rank, device, search context and available space.
You provide the possible assets. Google decides which eligible combination appears in each auction.
Account, Campaign and Ad Group Level Assets
Assets can be set at different levels and more specific associations usually take precedence. This ties into your account structure.
Account level assets: Information relevant across the whole business. Examples: "Free Initial Quote," "Melbourne Based Team," "Australian Owned."
Campaign level assets: Information relevant to a service category. An Emergency Plumbing campaign might have callouts like "24/7 Response," "Burst Pipe Repairs," "Same Day Callouts."
Ad group level assets: Highly specific to a single service. A Hot Water Repairs ad group might have sitelinks for "Gas Hot Water," "Electric Systems," "Same Day Repairs."
Put universal information at account level and service specific information closer to the ad group.
Sitelink Assets: Additional Paths Into the Website
Sitelinks add clickable links directing users to specific pages. They can make the ad more useful, send visitors closer to what they need, showcase multiple services, reduce unnecessary navigation and support different user intentions.
Good sitelink examples
For a plumber: Emergency Plumbing, Blocked Drains, Hot Water Repairs, Service Areas, Request A Quote
For a digital agency: SEO Services, Google Ads Management, Web Design, Case Studies, Request A Quote
Best practices
Add at least four relevant sitelinks
Send each to a different useful page (not the homepage)
Write descriptive text, not vague labels
Add sitelink descriptions where available
Use campaign specific sitelinks where services differ
Ensure every destination works on mobile
Weak | Stronger |
Home | Emergency Electrician |
About | Switchboard Upgrades |
Services | EV Charger Installation |
Contact | Request A Quote |
A sitelink should help someone skip directly to the part of the website they actually need.
Callout Assets: Short Reasons to Choose the Business
Callouts add short, non clickable statements highlighting benefits, service features, guarantees, offers and trust signals. They appear alongside the ad but are not individually clickable.
Strong callout examples
Free Quotes, No Lock In Contracts, Licensed and Insured, Same Day Response, Melbourne Based Team, Transparent Pricing, Open Seven Days, 10+ Years Experience, Workmanship Guarantee
Weak | Stronger |
Great Service | Upfront Fixed Quotes |
High Quality | Same Day Appointments |
Trusted Company | No Call Out Fee |
Customer Focused | Registered Electricians |
"Trusted service" asks people to believe you. "Licensed, insured and 200+ reviews" gives them a reason.
Callouts vs headlines: avoid saying the same thing twice
Each component should do a different job. Headlines: relevance and attention. Descriptions: offer and explanation. Callouts: supporting proof or benefit. Sitelinks: alternative action or page. If a callout repeats a headline word for word, it is wasting space that could communicate something new.
Assets work best when they add information rather than echo it.
Structured Snippet Assets: Show the Range of Services
Structured snippets use a predefined header (like Services, Types or Destinations) followed by a list of values. They are descriptive, not clickable and designed to show categories or ranges.
Good examples by business type
Tradie: Services: Blocked Drains, Hot Water, Gas Fitting, Leak Repairs
Law firm: Service catalogue: Family Law, Criminal Law, Commercial Law, Wills and Estates
Dental clinic: Types: General Dentistry, Emergency Care, Implants, Veneers
Agency: Services: SEO, Google Ads, Web Design, Paid Social
Do not use structured snippets for promotional claims like "Best Service" or "Free Quote." Those belong in callouts or headlines. Callouts explain why someone should choose you. Structured snippets explain what they can choose from.
Feature | Callout | Structured Snippet |
Purpose | Benefit or differentiator | Service range or category |
Clickable | No | No |
Header required | No | Yes (predefined) |
Example | Same Day Service | Services: Repairs, Installs, Upgrades |
Best for | Why to choose you | What you offer |
Call Assets: Critical for Phone Led Businesses
Call assets allow eligible searchers to tap to call on mobile or access the business number from desktop, sometimes without visiting the website first. For tradies, lawyers, clinics, emergency services and appointment led businesses, this can be the most important asset. Our call tracking guide covers the tracking setup and our conversion tracking guide explains how to connect calls to campaign performance.
Setup considerations
Use the correct phone number
Enable call reporting where appropriate
Schedule the asset for hours when calls can be answered
Set a minimum call duration rule to filter out accidental taps
Configure a qualified call conversion action
Review missed calls weekly
Businesses should increasingly use responsive search ads with call assets rather than relying on legacy call only ads.
Location Assets: Useful for Businesses Customers Visit
Location assets can display the business address, map information, approximate distance, directions and business hours. Best suited to dentists, clinics, restaurants, retail stores, accountants with physical offices, law firms, mechanics and showrooms. Our location targeting guide covers the broader geographic strategy.
Setup typically involves connecting location information through Google Business Profile.
When location assets may not help
Fully remote businesses
Home based operations not accepting visitors
Businesses where the address should remain private
Operations with inaccurate Business Profile information
What to verify
Address accuracy
Phone number
Opening hours
Map pin location
Business Profile ownership
A location asset should help customers find the business, not send them to an outdated address or a location that does not accept visitors.
Image Assets: When Visual Proof Adds Something Useful
Image assets can complement Search ad text with relevant visuals. Potentially useful for ecommerce, restaurants, home renovations, cosmetic clinics, landscaping, accommodation, wedding venues and visual design services.
Good image ideas: finished projects, real products, clinic interiors, team at work, service outcomes, branded vehicles, real business locations.
Avoid: generic stock photography, text heavy graphics, low resolution images, misleading before and after imagery, irrelevant lifestyle shots, AI generated images that create false expectations.
The ACCC expects advertising claims to be truthful and not misleading. This applies to images as well as text. If the image creates an expectation the business cannot meet, it is a compliance risk.
Use an image when it gives the searcher useful visual evidence, not simply because an empty asset slot exists.
Business Name and Logo Assets
These assets reinforce who is advertising. They provide clearer advertiser identity, stronger brand recognition and reassurance that the ad belongs to a real business. Check that the logo is readable at small sizes, the business name is correct, the branding is consistent with advertiser verification and the assets align with the landing page.
The searcher should immediately recognise which business is behind the ad.
Optional Assets: Price, Promotion, Lead Form and More
Price assets
Display services, products, prices, qualifiers and direct links. Useful for fixed price services, standard packages, subscription plans and transparent starting prices. Example: "Website Packages From $X," "Initial Consultation $X." Avoid when pricing changes constantly, every job requires custom quoting or the displayed figure could mislead. Price assets work when pricing builds confidence. They hurt when the number needs an explanation the ad cannot provide.
Promotion assets
Highlight genuine time sensitive offers: seasonal promotions, percentage discounts, limited sale periods. Set start and end dates. Keep landing page details consistent. Remove expired promotions. Avoid permanently "limited" offers and fake urgency. The ACCC expects pricing claims to be transparent and accurate.
Lead form assets
Allow users to submit information directly through the ad without visiting the website first. Fewer steps and mobile convenience, but potentially lower lead quality because the visitor skips the landing page education. Best suited to simple quote requests, consultations and event registrations. Removing friction can increase leads. It can also remove the friction that filters out weak enquiries.
Message, app and affiliate location assets
Message assets direct users into a messaging platform. Only enable when someone will reply promptly. App assets are relevant when the business has a mobile app. Affiliate location assets show nearby stores carrying your products. Neither is normally needed by a standard Melbourne lead generation business.
Manually Created vs Automatically Generated Assets
Google may automatically generate assets using information from the website, landing pages and existing ads. This can include dynamic sitelinks, callouts, structured snippets and business information. Our guide on settings that waste budget covers how automatic features can expand beyond what you intended.
Potential benefits: less setup work, more eligible asset combinations, additional website links.
Potential risks: outdated pages pulled in, weak website language reused, irrelevant links, old offers appearing, generic messaging.
Recommended approach:
Create strong manual assets first
Review automated asset reports regularly
Keep useful automated assets, disable unsuitable ones
Fix the website content that automated assets draw from
Automated assets are only as trustworthy as the information Google finds about the business.
How Assets Affect Ad Rank and Cost
Ad Rank is influenced by multiple factors including bid, expected click through rate, ad relevance, landing page experience, competition, auction context and the expected impact of assets and ad formats. Assets can contribute by making the ad more relevant, more useful and easier to interact with.
But assets do not:
Guarantee top position
Guarantee lower CPC
Fix poor keywords or weak landing pages
Compensate for an irrelevant offer
Always appear in every auction
Do assets cost extra?
There is generally no setup fee for adding an asset. But clicks or eligible interactions on assets (sitelink clicks, call button taps, direction interactions) are paid clicks charged at the normal rate. Non clickable callouts and structured snippets do not create their own separate click charge. Assets are not free traffic. They are additional ways for a paid ad to generate a useful interaction.
Assets support Ad Rank. They are not a shortcut around ad quality.
Starter Asset Setup for a Melbourne Service Business
Here is a practical starting setup for a northern Melbourne electrician. Our first 30 days guide covers the broader Week 1 plan and this should be part of it.
Sitelinks: Emergency Electrician, Switchboard Upgrades, EV Charger Installation, Request A Quote, Service Areas, Customer Reviews
Callouts: Licensed Electricians, Same Day Service, Upfront Quotes, Melbourne Based Team, Fully Insured, Workmanship Guarantee
Structured snippet: Services: Fault Repairs, Switchboards, EV Chargers, Safety Checks
Call asset: Business phone number, scheduled during answerable hours, call reporting enabled, qualified call conversion configured
Location asset: Only where the address is accurate and customer facing
Image assets: Real electrician at work, completed switchboard, branded service vehicle
A strong asset setup answers what the business does, why it can be trusted and how the customer can take the next step.
Asset Recommendations by Business Type
Business Type | Essential Starting Assets | Useful Optional Assets |
Tradie | Sitelinks, callouts, snippets, call | Location, image, price |
Law firm | Sitelinks, callouts, snippets, call | Location, lead form, image |
Dental clinic | Sitelinks, callouts, snippets, call, location | Image, price, lead form |
Accountant | Sitelinks, callouts, snippets, call | Location, lead form |
Ecommerce | Sitelinks, callouts, images | Price, promotion |
Digital agency | Sitelinks, callouts, snippets | Lead form, image, price |
Restaurant | Sitelinks, callouts, location, call | Image, promotion, price |
"Essential" means strongly recommended where relevant, not universally mandatory. A fully remote accountant does not need a location asset just because the table says accountants typically benefit from one.

How to Measure Asset Performance
Review the Assets report for impressions, clicks, CTR, cost, conversions and asset level interactions. Use click type segmentation where available to distinguish headline clicks from sitelink clicks, call clicks and direction interactions.
Do not judge an asset only by:
Whether it appeared (impressions alone)
Raw clicks without conversion data
A short date range
Google's label alone without business outcome data
Why your assets may not be showing
Insufficient Ad Rank
Predicted asset impact is low
Policy disapproval
Incorrect association level
Scheduling restrictions
Limited screen space or device differences
Google selected a different eligible combination
An approved asset is eligible to show. It is not guaranteed to show in every auction. Check approval status, associations, scheduling and Ad Rank if assets are not appearing.
An asset is useful when it helps create better customer actions, not merely when it receives impressions.
Common Google Ads Asset Mistakes
More assets are useful only when they provide more useful information. Our Google Ads diagnosis guide covers broader campaign issues. Here are the asset specific mistakes.
Using no assets at all
Adding only one sitelink instead of at least four
Linking all sitelinks to the homepage
Vague sitelink labels like "Home," "Services," "Learn More"
Repeating headlines word for word as callouts
Using promotional claims as structured snippet values
Including a phone number that nobody answers
Showing call assets outside business hours
Connecting an inaccurate Google Business Profile
Using stock images that add no real proof
Leaving expired promotions or outdated prices active
Creating lead forms with no follow up process
Trusting automated assets without reviewing them
Assuming assets guarantee a lower CPC
Placing all assets at account level despite different services

What We Recommend at Elev8d
We set up assets as part of every campaign launch. Our SEM management treats assets as integral to the ad, not as optional extras to add later. Sitelinks, callouts and structured snippets go in before the campaign goes live. Call assets are configured with proper tracking and scheduling. Location assets are verified against the actual Business Profile.
We also connect assets to the broader funnel. Sitelinks point to dedicated service pages, not the homepage. Callouts reflect genuine differentiators, not generic filler. And for businesses that need landing pages built specifically for their campaigns, our Melbourne web design team builds the pages that sitelinks point to.
When assets, ad copy, landing pages and SEO content all reinforce the same message, the whole system performs better.
Assets cannot rescue an irrelevant ad, but they can make a relevant ad far more useful.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are Google Ads extensions called now?
They are now called assets. Sitelink extensions became sitelink assets, call extensions became call assets and so on. The function is largely the same.
Which Google Ads assets should I use?
At minimum: sitelinks, callouts and structured snippets for most Search campaigns. Add call assets if the business takes phone enquiries, location assets if customers visit a physical location and image assets where visual proof adds value. Everything else depends on the specific business.
How many sitelinks should I add?
At least four. Each should link to a different useful page. More is better as long as each destination is genuinely relevant. Google will choose which combination to show based on the auction.
What is the difference between callouts and structured snippets?
Callouts highlight benefits and differentiators ("Same Day Service," "No Call Out Fee"). Structured snippets show the range of what the business offers using a predefined header ("Services: Repairs, Installs, Upgrades"). Callouts explain why. Snippets explain what.
Do Google Ads assets improve Ad Rank?
The expected impact of assets contributes to Ad Rank alongside bid, ad relevance, landing page experience and other factors. But assets do not guarantee higher position or lower CPC. They are one part of a broader quality equation.
Do I pay when someone clicks a sitelink?
Yes. A click on a sitelink is charged like a normal ad click. The same applies to call asset interactions and direction clicks. Non clickable assets like callouts and structured snippets do not generate their own click charge.
Why are my Google Ads assets not showing?
Possible reasons: insufficient Ad Rank, low predicted impact, policy disapproval, incorrect association level, scheduling restrictions, device or format limitations or Google selecting a different combination. Check approval status and asset reports.
Should assets be added at account or campaign level?
Both. Universal information ("Melbourne Based Team," "Free Quotes") works at account level. Service specific information should be at campaign or ad group level. Our Google Ads budget estimator can help you plan how campaigns are structured, which affects where assets should sit.
Are automatically created assets worth using?
Sometimes. Review them in the asset reports. Keep useful ones, disable unsuitable ones and fix the website content they draw from. They are only as reliable as the information Google finds about the business.
Which assets are best for local Melbourne businesses?
Sitelinks pointing to service pages, callouts with genuine local differentiators, structured snippets showing service categories, call assets with proper tracking and location assets where the address is accurate. Our landing pages guide covers why those destination pages matter as much as the assets pointing to them.
