The Challenge
A solo psychology practice on the Gold Coast had everything going for it except one thing. Nobody could find it online. The practitioner was excellent and the reviews were glowing, but the website sat on page three of Google for the searches that actually mattered, the ones people type when they are looking for help right now.
They had tried a cheap SEO package before that promised the world, delivered a spike, then crashed. By the time they came to us, they were sceptical that SEO could work for a small, local, single practitioner clinic in a competitive health niche.
Where they started. Page three for core service terms, a slow website that failed mobile speed tests and almost no enquiries coming through organic search.
What We Did
We did not promise a quick win. We promised a foundation that would hold and then built it methodically across three phases.
1. Fixed the technical foundation
First we made the site fast and crawlable. We compressed assets, cleaned up the structure, fixed mobile speed and added proper local schema markup so Google understood exactly who the practice was and where it served.
2. Built content around real intent
Instead of stuffing keywords, we mapped the questions real clients ask before booking and answered them properly. Service pages and guides written for anxious people looking for help, not for an algorithm.
3. Earned local authority
We optimised the Google Business Profile, built consistent local citations and earned a handful of genuinely relevant links from health and community sources. The kind Google rewards for years, not the kind that get you penalised.
The principle. We built for the long game from day one. No shortcuts means nothing to unwind when Google changes the rules, which is exactly why this ranking has held for seven years.
The Results
Within six months the practice reached the #1 position for its core service term. The remarkable part is not getting there, it is staying there. Seven years and a dozen plus major algorithm updates later, it is still #1.
Metric | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
Ranking (core term) | Page 3 | #1, held 7+ yrs |
Organic enquiries | A trickle | +300% |
Mobile page speed | Failing | Passing (green) |
Algorithm updates survived | None tracked | 25+ |
Key Takeaways
SEO done properly compounds. This practice is still #1 seven years on because the foundation was right from day one.
Small and local can win big. You do not need a huge budget to dominate a competitive local niche. You need the right strategy.
Foundations beat shortcuts. The rankings that survive updates are built on genuine quality, not tricks.
Rankings turn into revenue. A #1 position for a high intent term is a steady stream of ready to book clients.
Notes: Client anonymised at their request. Metrics are real and indicative of this engagement. Results vary by industry, competition and starting point. This work spans several years and was delivered by the team now at Elev8d.
